Below is a ‘by the numbers’ account of some of GTA 5 & GTA Online’s achievements since launch five years ago. I have gathered the information from a number of sources which I will list at the bottom of the article:
$800 million – The amount of money GTA 5 made in it’s first 24 hours after launch worldwide
$1 billion – Surpassed the billion dollar mark after just three days
29 million copies sold in the first six weeks (Surpassing previous GTA 4 lifetime sales)
85 million copies sold by November 2017 across all platforms
30,000-66,000 Players using GTA online daily on PC alone
$500 million spent by players purchasing in-game currency for GTA Online
7 Guinness World Records broken including fastest entertainment property to gross $1 billion
How do these figures fair against our beloved ‘Star Wars’ franchise? Well listed below are the gross takings of the last three Star Wars movies. You decide which figures are more impressive :
The Force Awakens : $2.07 billion
The Last Jedi : $1.3 billion
Rogue One : $1.06 billion
The figures for GTA 5 are simply remarkable and shows what a juggernaut the GTA franchise has become, shaping things to come in the future. It’s hard to imagine but Rockstar’s next game ‘Red Dead Redemption 2’ is coming later this year (rumored for July release). The online component that has become such a successful money maker for GTA is bound to influence the upcoming ‘Red Dead’. I for one am excited to see how things develop. Will ‘Red Dead’ have an truly excellent single player story driven narrative or will the ever growing ‘cash monster’ that is online, completely influence how the game is developed?
